Art in New and Interesting Places
Heeding the call to come home, to the place where I was born.

Main street Indiana has been very welcoming. Though not known, widely, for it's creative scene, this place is churning with talent. Perhaps its in the water.
Loading my worldly goods into my car, I headed out for Indiana. Three days later, I landed in unfamiliar territory that was to become my new way of life. In the first hour, I was presented with an art project.
A bit of history here for context: Not everyone's Mother upon their son's arrival suggests large scale public facing art projects. This has always been the way it goes. We get together and big funny artistic things happen. Like Interior design projects, large-scale newsletters and the occasional theatrical stage built to spawn comedy improv and Ac-Tor scene development. .
Loving the challenge, I of course said YAASSS!! and I set to work finding the look.
She wanted cows. A longtime fan of Gary Larson's, I took inspiration from his world of farm animals, and started with a colored pencil study of the look (slide show below).
Along the way, we felt a strong pull from a certain nursery rhyme and added the Dish running away with the Spoon. This also led to us wanting a moon. We were having a hard time finding the right look for that distant orb. Enter, Maggie. A 13 year old Maltese/Chihuahua with a sweet face and a love of cuddles. Her infectious smile was a perfect fit (ala Man in the Moon). With these pieces in place, I created a previsualization, using a picture of the garage (see in the slide show).
Along the way there was a long conversation and search regarding just the right barn red (the struggle is real.) We wanted something that said barn, but was a bit more vibrant and eye catching. We chose Sherwin-Williams Poinsettia (6594) exterior satin. Should they be paying us for this?
Finally it was time to paint Over a few days, brush in hand, it came together. First red outlines of everything and filling in to make a pleasing flat background. This left the cows and such in white. The final black line work and pink for silly accent, tied it all together nicely.
Now it seems, some more ideas are percolating. Updates to follow.
